I love this quote so much, not just because it shows how Darren’s mind works but because of the message behind it.
This to me is what the Born This Way t-shirts/Schuester concept was meant to be but got kind of lost and muddled. It isn’t about what you wish you could change about yourself, or learning to “accept” the things that make your life difficult: it’s about gaining strength from things that set you apart, for good or bad, from the rest of society. That you don’t learn to accept or allow that one quality to define everything about yourself; it’s that you learn to stand strong - even if you’re all alone.
It can be lonely being different, and certain differences can sometimes bring a person real grief and difficulty in life. But those are exactly the qualities that can make you stronger as a human being, if you are willing to stand by them. It doesn’t matter what that quality is or why it makes you different: it only matters that you protect and own everything that makes you who you really are.
It could be your sexuality, your race, whatever: if you stand by what you feel makes you a good and whole human being, despite any amount of pressure to change, you will only get stronger.
